In the early 1990s, a separate field in medicine began to form in global practice – "invasive cardiology," which involves the introduction of innovative methods into clinical practice, such as angioplasty and stenting of coronary arteries. In Russia, this method began to emerge as a separate direction in the mid-1990s, at the intersection of several specialties – radiology, cardiology, and cardiovascular surgery.
Initially, angioplasty and stenting were applied areas of primary specialties – cardiology, cardiac surgery, and cardiovascular surgery. Thanks to a number of outstanding Soviet and Russian scientists (Anatoly Petrovich Savchenko, Vasily Vasilyevich Chestukhin, Bagrat Gegamovich Alekyan, Sergey Alexandrovich Abugov), the foundation for a new medical specialty – X-ray endovascular diagnostics and treatment – was established in the 1990s.
Boris Alexandrovich Rudenko is at the forefront of this new direction – angioplasty and stenting of coronary arteries – participating in the first domestic operations for the implantation of stents into the coronary bed.
From 1995 to 1998, Boris Alexandrovich Rudenko trained in the "first cosmonaut squad" for X-ray endovascular diagnostics and surgery at the Research Center for Surgery, acquiring initial skills in endovascular treatment of patients with severe cardiovascular pathology. In 1998, Boris Alexandrovich Rudenko defended one of the first Ph.D. theses in the field of X-ray endovascular diagnostics and treatment on the topic "Angioplasty and stenting of bifurcation stenoses in patients with ischemic heart disease."
From 1998 to 2012, Boris Alexandrovich Rudenko held the position of Leading Researcher in the Department of Radiology and Angiographic Research Methods at the Russian Cardiology Research and Production Complex, engaging in practical surgical interventions and active scientific work in the rapidly developing field of endovascular surgery.
In 2000, Boris Alexandrovich Rudenko was the first in the history of the Russian Cardiology Research and Production Complex to perform an endovascular intervention using radial access (through the radial artery at the wrist).
This method of performing endovascular procedures became fundamental in endovascular surgery due to the significant reduction in postoperative bleeding frequency. As a result, postoperative mortality was reduced, saving the lives of numerous patients with both acute and chronic cardiovascular pathology (myocardial infarction, stroke, etc.).
In 2004, at the age of 34 (being one of the youngest Doctors of Medical Sciences in the history of the Cardiology Center), Boris Alexandrovich Rudenko defended his doctoral thesis on the topic "Secondary endovascular interventions in the comprehensive treatment of patients with ischemic heart disease." Boris Alexandrovich Rudenko is the author of numerous publications and a leading specialist in the field of endovascular treatment of atherosclerotic lesions of grafts in patients with ischemic heart disease after coronary artery bypass grafting.
From 2012 to 2023, Boris Alexandrovich Rudenko was the Head of the Department of Innovative Methods of Prevention and Treatment of Cardiovascular Diseases at the State Research Center for Preventive Medicine. In practical medicine, Boris Alexandrovich Rudenko conducts his activities at the State Research Center for Preventive Medicine and the State Research Center for Gerontology. In these medical institutions, Boris Alexandrovich Rudenko continues to improve the endovascular method, implementing angioplasty and stenting in the treatment of atherosclerosis of the carotid arteries and lower limb arteries. This has significantly reduced the frequency of acute complications such as acute cerebrovascular accidents (strokes) and acute lower limb ischemia as part of preventive measures.
Boris Alexandrovich Rudenko is one of the leading specialists in renal artery and pulmonary artery radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for the treatment of systemic and pulmonary arterial hypertension. In 2019, he was the first in the world to apply the method of cryoablation for sympathetic denervation of the pulmonary artery, which helped patients with severe forms of pulmonary hypertension and heart failure resistant to medical treatment.
Since 2023, Boris Alexandrovich Rudenko has been the Deputy Chief Physician for Surgery at the Scandinavian Health Center, working with a team of leading specialists in cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, and arrhythmology (Natalia Evgenievna Gavrilova, Evgeny Alexandrovich Gorbatov).
Main areas of practical and scientific activity: cardiology, pathology of cerebral vessels, renal vessels, and lower limb vessels, X-ray endovascular diagnostics and treatment.
Experience in X-ray operating rooms: more than 30 years. Annually performs about 500 diagnostic and therapeutic interventions on the vessels of the heart, brain, kidneys, and lower limbs.
Over 150 scientific publications, including 3 monographs on X-ray endovascular diagnostics and treatment and publications in leading world medical journals. Hirsch Index in RSCI – 10, Scopus – 3.
Boris Alexandrovich Rudenko is a renowned domestic and international specialist in the field of X-ray endovascular diagnostics and treatment of cardiovascular diseases with many years of experience in operations for ischemic heart disease, atherosclerosis of the brachiocephalic arteries, and lower limb arteries.
A pioneer in the implementation of innovative interventions in global practice, such as radiofrequency ablation and cryodestruction for pulmonary hypertension.
For his many years of work, he was awarded the Certificate of Honor of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation in 2016.
